Lakeside and Somers

Lakeside and Somers are two small communities located along the west shore of Flathead Lake that encompass 13 miles of lake frontage. They are located about 8 miles south of Kalispell and a great destination spot. The views are truly amazing as you gaze across Flathead Lake to the Mission Mountain Range. Like most other Montana communities there is year round recreation to be found in these two small communities. Nestled above the town of Lakeside, Blacktail Mountain is the Valley's newest ski resort and offers some of the best skiing for your whole family throughout the winter months. There are amazing views of Flathead Lake, incredible north facing power and great rates. Blacktail offers over 1000 acres of National Forest, 1440’ in vertical drop. It is a great smaller resort to offer wonderful skiing in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. There are also miles of groomed trails on national forest land great for snowmobiling and cross country skiing.

The summer season draws in many visitors to the communities. There are state parks along the shores of the lake that are great for spending a sunny afternoon. Somers is home to the North Flathead Yacht Club. Members and guests race out of Somers Bay each Tuesday and Friday evening from mid June through August. It is a spectacular sight to watch. If you would rather get out on the water than just watch, catch a Flathead Lake cruise. The Far West offers cruises throughout the summer season, departing from Somers. The Far West is a great opportunity to see the shores of Flathead Lake. Passengers are taken around a loop at the north end of the lake and then out for a 360 degree panorama of the mountains. There are daily 1 ½ hour trips, sunset cruises, and Sunday brunch cruises. There are also fishing carters that always promise to be an exciting activity. Flathead Lake is known to have some of the best Lake Trout (Mackinaw) fishing in the Northwest. The Mackinaw live in the cold, clear, well oxygenated water of the lake. Flathead Lake has depths of up to 380 feet and has the rocky gravel bottom that the fish prefer. The lake also features the ideal water temperatures of 40-52 degrees F. Besides Lake Trout, Flathead Lake and the rivers that feed it are habitat to Bull Trout, Cutthroat, Rainbow Trout and Lake Whitefish.

History

The community of Lakeside began with the Native American tribes. They spend winters along the shoreline of Flathead Lake where they hunted game and fished the clear blue waters. Fur traders and gold seekers en route to Canada from the military forts in southern Montana traveled Flathead Lake and steamers plied the lake until the mid 1930s, making regular stops in Lakeside. Prior to 1900 the town of Lakeside was known as "Stoner", after John Stoner, the first postmaster, who built and operated a hotel where the creek that still bears his name flows into Flathead Lake. The name was later changed to "Chautauqua" and then "Lacon" and finally in 1920, it became Lakeside.

Somers, on the other hand, owes its existence to the Great Northern Railway and the timber industry like many other Flathead Valley cities and towns. Railroad ties were needed for the extension of the tracks throughout the west, and the ready supply of timber surrounding Flathead Lake made the north end of the lake an ideal mill site. From 1900 to 1949 the Somers Lumber Company produced thousands of ties. The first general store was built in 1900. This building and other historic turn of the century buildings are still in use by Sliters Lumber Company.
